Boots and Pearls

A racy, candid and informative diary into the world of beekeeping and the beekeepers. A widowed city gal in her late fifties meets a divorced Swiss beekeeper in his early sixties via the internet and takes on a new life.

BOOTS AND PEARLS is a story of growth, self re-invention and examination; of bees and sex, partnership and business. It is Beekeeping #101 through a "hands on" approach. A candid Diary of day to day life in and out of the fields and bed-sheets with the city gal turned beekeep. And face it, as one of my readers said "thrilling and informative –parallel stories – and who doesn’t like to read a very candid, personal, sexy diary?"

Available now in Paperback: $10.50 or Kindle: $7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars! Flowery praise for a book about the bees

Boots and Pearls is what literature, non-fiction or fiction, is all about: vivid snap-shot images, reflections of real life, that highlight our peak experiences. Erika captures the first meeting with a treasured friend and companion (Klaus, of course), and the first efforts at mastering a new, valuable, professional skill (beekeeping, of course). These snap-shot images of Erika's life spark your interest and warm your heart. These scenes in the adventures of beekeeping are woven together in a compelling narrative.

This true tale might have been "just" a miracle, of two dynamic souls finding one another. However, the tale takes on another level of significance. The harmony of Erika and Klaus reflects another level of harmony: the hope of man's survival, through learning to live in a cooperative relationship with nature.

The interdependence of man and the other species is nowhere so striking as in the pivotal symbiosis with the bees. The honey is just the "icing on the cake": without the bees to pollinate our crops, we will not have successful horticulture. In other words, we would have no honey, and no food, either!

The delightful harmony between Klaus and Erika is not a surprise, when one takes note of their work, and the harmony with nature in true beekeeping. [The book includes some practical information for prospective beekeepers!] This heart-warming story reminds us that the flame of love is every alive, that "2+2=5," that the human species can survive, and--with the help of the bees--can even thrive.

I found Boots and Pearls to be a thoroughly enjoyable and captivating read. Love sparks, ignites and grows into much more as lives are intertwined and transformed. I applaud the candor and honesty of the writing. The juxtaposed passions for life and livelihood make this book almost impossible to put down. Whether it be winter by the fire or summer by the sea, Boots and Pearls should be required reading.

This diary tells a great story about the difficulties one faces when "starting over" and the happiness found throughout that surprising journey. Decker enchants you with her imagery: you feel the serenity pass through you as you start hearing the melodic hum of bees buzzing; and the passion intrigue you as her new relationship with Bee Keeper Klaus ignites the pages. It also brings to attention the concern of the diminishing bee population and the importance of these fascinating creatures that support our food source. A truly inspirational story that demonstrates how when a person lives outside their comfort zone, they begin to realize where true inspiration, happiness, and love lie. Terrific read!
